Chino Moreno is a busy musician and he’s just added another band to his ever-expanding résumé, which already included Deftones, Palms, Crosses and Team Sleep. Saudade are the latest project from Moreno, rounded out by members of Bad Brains and Cro-Mags.
The band is an ethereal rock outfit featuring guitarist Dr. Know (Bad Brains), drummer Mackie Jayson (Bad Brains, Cro-Mags) jazz keyboardist John Medeski and Moreno’s Crosses bandmate Chuck Doom. The first taste of new music comes from the song “Saudade,” heard above. The track is highly atmospheric and quite moving, exploring an array of emotions in a gradual buildup that boils to a head nearing the end, making for a climactic close. The music is largely representative of the band’s name, which is an intense feeling of longing or melancholy, particularly for someone who is no longer present.
Fans of Moreno will be quick to draw sonic comparisons to the post-rock styling of one of his other projects, Palms. While similar in scope, Saudade sees each instrument transcend its individual contributions while being loosely tied together as they drift further apart in their own ambitions. In November of last year, it was reported that Dr. Know was hospitalized and in serious condition. What was initially cardiac arrest grew to multiple organ failure as the guitarist was placed on life support for nearly two weeks. After a three-month hospital stay, Dr. Know pulled through and entered rehabilitation, leaving him with a stack of medical bills. A crowdfunding campaign was launched to aid the guitarist and donations can still be made here.
While other details regarding Saudade remain unknown, fans can whet their appetite with the new Deftones album Gore, which was released to critical acclaim earlier in April. Look for Deftones on tour in May and again in August.
